Toxin-Free Homemade Suncreen Lotion Bars

Hiya Sun-Lovers!!

As promised, I finally got all of my supplies together to make Sunscreen Lotion Bars! The recipe is super simple - only 4 ingredients required - and it's working great! So far so good!

Here's the thing, I live at the beach, I am always outside but I don't use sunscreen because of all the dangerous toxins most of them contain. After getting red-nosed more than a couple of times this year I decided that I needed to figure something out and why not make my own? Then I'll know exactly what's in it! The recipe I liked and decided to try I found from MommyPotomas and most of my ingredients I purchased from Amazon (I've provide links!) Not only will this bar protect you from the sun's harmful rays, it also moisturizes and soothes the skin!

*there are some safe sunscreens on the market. click here for a list of what to stay away from and other better alternatives.

Supplies:
(I made 2 bars)

1/3 cup melted extra virgin coconut oil
1/3 cup shea butter (find here)
1/2 cup grated, tightly packed beeswax – about 2 oz weighed (find here)
2 rounded tablespoons uncoated, non-nanoparticle zinc oxide (find here)
Soap Mold or Muffin Tin (silicon molds work awesome!)

Instructions:

1.  In a double-boiler, slowly melt Coconut Oil, Shea Butter & Beeswax, stirring until completely melted.

2. Remove from heat and add Zinc Oxide. I also added Lavender Essential Oil, which beyond smelling great is soothing and healing for the skin, including burns!

3.  After mixture is smooth and fully combined, pour into your molds.

Learn from my mistake here!! While I thought that the zinc oxide was completely mixed in it was not at all!! Next time I will use a fork or whisk - this time I guess I'll just have a lower SPF! lol

4.  Allow bars to cool. Okay to stick in fridge or freezer to speed up wait time!
5.  Apply indoors (bars will melt in the beach heat). Rub and massage into skin
6.  Enjoy the sun Burn-Free

And Now a Little About Why this Works...

Sun Protection does not just come from chemicals but from tons of natural sources as well - even consuming tomatoes helps your body develop natural resistance to burning! Protection from the inside out! As you can see from this image, certain oils carry their own degree of SPF, the oils that I used with these bars included: Coconut Oil 2-8 SPF and Shea Butter 3-6 SPF. So before even adding the Zinc Oxide, the bars already had a base level protection of 5-14 SPF!! The main purpose of the Beeswax is to hold the bars together, but the Zinc Oxide is really what is going to keep harmful rays away. Remember that White-Nose Sunscreen? That's Zinc Oxide protection. Different from modern chemical barriers that absorb harmful rays, Zinc Oxide literally provides a barrier. It's one of those situations where they tried to make something better (getting rid of the White-Nose) and ended up making it worse. No biggie - we'll just go back to basics, back to the earth.

Let me know if you try out this recipe and share pictures of how your bars turn out! I'd also like to here is you have another recipe that you love!
Question? Just ask!

with Love,
Mandy
