Commandment 3: She Goes Bare

Hi Mommas!! I hope you don't mind but I'm just going to jump right in!!

This next commandment came naturally after buckling down on the toxins that I, as a Pre-Pregnancy Momma, wouldn’t allow in my body. The fact is that in today’s world, our bodies are constantly bombarded with foreign substances…..

Kay, wait…let me just break this down because I feel like it could start sounding like a lecture real quick. The way I see it, there are tons of things in the world that we live in that hurt us. Some things we don’t have control over – the air we breathe or damage from cell phones & electromagnetic fields; We just have to believe in our body’s ability to cleanse those poisons out of our system on a daily basis. However, some toxins we do have a say of whether or not they make their way into our body – the food we eat and what we put on our skin – so why not give our body a break instead of overwhelming it. If I can cut out some of the dangers entering my body, then not only do I become more efficient at eliminating the toxins that can’t be helped, but I also have enough energy and strength left over to heal, to protect, and to live more vibrantly.
Make sense?
If your body isn’t so consumed with detoxifying all the time, then it can use that energy to strengthen your immune system, preserve your gorgeous, youthful skin, even heal long term damage AND get prepared for baby!!

So after putting my foot down on what I will allow past my lips I began looking at what I put on my skin. I started to go Bare…and this is the process where I really felt myself grow spiritually. I mean it’s through this transition that I really felt my already hippie-self go super granola…

168 Chemicals Women Are Exposed to Daily
http://www.healthy-holistic-living.com/chemical-exposure.html
Very simply:  Our skin absorbs whatever we put on it.
If you didn’t know that, then now you do. Whatever you put on your skin, you might as well be putting in your mouth because whatever the entrance, it still gets in there. I think that this is something that we all either intuitively know or it’s something we learned in a science class somewhere along the way, but it’s just not as obvious. As a woman, we typically have a myriad of beauty products that we use on a daily basis without even thinking twice about what’s in it. Meanwhile we are absorbing as much as 60% of what we put onto our skin; many of these substances being cancer-causing and harmful to a fetus.

So the first step is to find out what chemicals are harmful. Below is a chart that I have found helpful.

Then look at your labels, and you might get a little overwhelmed – that’s okay!! It’s fine to start small, focus on a few of the big hitters, clean them out first.  That’s what I did! Every time you make a simple change, you are giving yourself a healthier body and it will thank you for it every time you do!

I recommend starting with removing any neurotoxins from your self-care products.  These are toxins that cross the blood brain barrier and do nervous system damage, namely the Fluoride in your toothpaste and Aluminum in your deodorant. Ironically while today I would say these are the most essential to remove, they were the most difficult for me to transition. Just being honest, the organic fluoride-free toothpaste tastes and feels different and at first left me wondering if my mouth was even getting clean. And then the deodorant – well let me just say I am a sweater, I can’t help it, I get it from my daddy – and no aluminum in deodorant pretty much means non-antiperspirant. So you can buy the stuff to disguise the smell but not the stuff that keeps you from sweating. I know. That sounds awesome. But here’s the thing when you are making changes, you have to be gentle with yourself. What I did was transition from using the bad toothpaste and bad deodorant every day to alternating every other day with the fluoride free and aluminum free products, allowing myself to get used to the new (cleaner) sensations. Before I knew it I didn’t mind the new stuff as much, and because I knew it was better for my body, it became so much easier to make the decision to just use the clean products instead!
And here’s a secret…The healthier and cleaner your body becomes the less stink you have.  I know it sounds crazy but I promise that it is true.  I know you know there is a difference between normal sweat and body odor and some nasty stank and that is what I am talking about. One is okay and one pretty offensive to the nose. The fewer toxins you put into your body, the more vegetables you eat to allow the body to do its job cleaning the less stinky.

My journey of Going Bare really took off after reading The Kind Mama, by Alicia Silverstone (which I highly recommend reading!). She talks about not only eliminating the bad stuff but also embracing your inner self and goddess in a beautiful way.  Any way she specifically talked about Parabens and Phthalates and those were the two that I choose to really focus on when cleaning up my makeup, soaps and lotions. (Refer to the images for what they are and why they are bad). Honestly I’ve also found that if you have a product that has made the effort to produce without these chemicals, chances are they aren’t going to have any other harmful chemicals either.
Safe products can be harder to find and sometimes more expensive but please don’t get discouraged – your health is so worth it – you are so worth it.  My favorite grocery store has a section with healthy Shampoos and soups, Amazon and online can be a great and simple place to look, and if you are lucky enough to live by a Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s then life will be a lot easier for you in finding clean alternatives for your beauty routine!! Also don’t be afraid to experiment and make your own beauty products! Essential Oils come in very handy here! Pinterest is a great place to look for deodorant, soap and other beauty product how-tos!

That's me Going Bare for you all
right out of the shower!! ;)
Also - it's pretty awesome how fast
you get ready when you skip make-up and hair
lol!!

When I do wear makeup I love Juice Beauty products and there are a lot of great ones out there – most often though you will have to order them.  I haven’t had the best of luck at my local drug store! But the truth is I hardly wear makeup anymore, and this is where the spiritual change has taken effect. When going out to eat or if I am speaking at an event wearing makeup still makes me feel good and gives me confidence. The rest of the time what makes me feel beautiful is going naked and baring it all. I like to show off what my body does for me by going all-natural. There’s this weird thing that happens when you start to really get healthy, stop the toxic intake, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables…Your Body Thanks You. It thanks you with more energy, glowing clear wrinkle-free skin, stronger hair and nails, vibrant eyes, a stronger immune system, resilient muscles and so much more

I would looooooove to hear what your favorite clean products and recipes are!!! Please comment with where you are in your toxin-free journey and don’t be afraid to email me with any questions! oh and a special shout out from Toby who wanted to help write today!!

with Love,
Mandy
